Empowering Students to Manage Screen Time: Insights from SLAS’s Screened Out Documentary Film Screening and Panel Discussion

BLURBHow can we support students in managing screen time effectively? In our recent Screened Out documentary film screening and panel discussion, an SLAS 11th grader shared a powerful insight: setting priorities first can be more impactful than limiting screen hours. Read more for practical strategies from parents, students, and staff on fostering healthy digital habits in our community!

At SLAS, we are committed to fostering balanced digital habits among our students, which is why we recently hosted a Screened Out documentary film screening and panel discussion in our auditorium. This event brought together parents, students, doctor Brenny Jiang (Pediatrician from Parkway Health) and our head of school guidance to explore effective strategies for screen time management in today’s digital landscape.

A New Perspective from an SLAS 11th Grader: Setting Priorities Over Screen Limits

One of the most impactful moments of the morning came from an SLAS 11th-grade student, who shared a valuable approach to screen management: focusing on setting priorities over imposing strict screen limits. Rather than limiting screen time, this student emphasized the importance of identifying and completing essential tasks—such as homework, projects, and social connections—before using screens for recreation. This “priorities-first” mindset encourages students to build their own sense of responsibility and independence, which is often more effective than parental restrictions.

Panel Highlights: Practical Strategies from Parents, Students, and Staff

Our panel, featuring two students, one parent, one doctor and the head of school guidance, discussed various ways to approach screen time thoughtfully:

  • Encouraging Device-Free Zones: Doctor Brenny shared the positive impact of creating device-free spaces in their homes, especially in bedrooms and during family mealtimes, to ensure screens do not interfere with essential daily routines.
  • Open Communication: Ms. Olivia, our head of school guidance emphasized the importance of maintaining open, judgment-free conversations with children about screen use. When students feel heard and involved in decision-making, they’re more likely to develop healthy habits.
  • Setting an Example: seeing parents model mindful screen use can make a significant difference in their own approach to technology.

A Commitment to Digital Wellness

At SLAS, we recognize the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital world. By engaging students and families in discussions like these, we aim to support our community in navigating the challenges they may face in a way that prioritizes responsibility and well-being.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Screened Out panel and to our wonderful panelists for sharing their insights. We look forward to continuing these conversations and supporting our students’ journey toward mindful habits.
