Wildcats Kitchen came alive this week as students explored the science behind baking. They focused on leaveners and how these ingredients help cupcakes rise. Students examined baking powder and baking soda, learning how they release gas when mixed and heated. This process creates air bubbles that make cupcakes light and fluffy. Each step gave students a clear view of how simple ingredients change during baking. Students also investigated physical changes. They mixed ingredients, watched butter melt, and observed how liquids and solids combined to form batter. These changes were easy to see and did not create new substances. Students recorded what they noticed and used clear vocabulary to describe each stage. This helped them connect hands-on actions with scientific ideas. The most exciting part came during baking. Students observed chemical changes as heat transformed the batter into cupcakes. They saw how new substances formed, with changes in texture, smell, and color. Gas bubbles expanded, structure set, and the cupcakes rose in the oven. Through this process, students understood how science drives everyday cooking and built strong connections between theory and real-world application.
Wildcats Kitchen successfully wrapped up its Global Dish unit, celebrating the rich cultural identities within our classroom. Each student independently researched a dish from their own culture, exploring its history, ingredients, and significance. They then brought their learning to life through hands-on cooking, showing strong ownership, independence, and pride in representing their heritage.
The unit culminated in an engaging taste test, where students presented their dishes and shared personal connections behind each recipe. The room was filled with excitement as classmates sampled a wide variety of flavours and learned directly from one another. Students spoke with confidence and clarity, turning each dish into a meaningful cultural story.
This unit highlighted the power of authentic learning rooted in identity and experience. Students strengthened their research, communication, and presentation skills while deepening their appreciation for diversity. Wildcats Kitchen continues to create purposeful learning experiences where every student’s voice and culture are valued.
