October 2016 Update

For the month of October, all students from K-5 participated in a lesson about self-esteem and how they can build their confidence for success in life.

For K-2, we focused on the message “I Am Special”. We learned a new song about being special in a good way. They were happy to share the talents they’re very good at. Then I shared a story about a cupcake who thinks he’s not good good enough and feels sad about the way he looks, that nobody would choose him to eat unlike the other colorful and interesting cupcakes. Students shared their ideas about being proud of what they can do. At the end of the lesson, I made them help the cupcake feel special, confident, and feel good about himself.

For 3-4, I read them a story entitled “Carla’s Sandwich” which is about Carla bringing weird sandwiches to school and her classmates have plenty to say about them like “It’s sick”, “That looks disgusting”. But Carla thinks otherwise. “It’s unique”. “It’s creative”, just like her. They really like the story of Carla and even shared same stories in their lives that were related to Carla’s story. We spent time discussing the good qualities of Carla and how she was able to help other kids be unique and taste the joy of being different. At the end of the lesson, they made their own unique sandwich and wrote about the good qualities that they have that make them different from others.

For 5th grade, we discussed the lesson about “Choosing To Succeed” by building their self-esteem. Students shared a lot of good thoughts in class that inspire others on how they can become successful in life. Here are some of the things they shared in class:

  • Always think positive!
  • Be confident!
  • Get rid of all the negative thoughts.
  • Be creative!
  • Study hard!
